The award-winning movie follows African-American teens Agee and William Gates, his friend, as their basketball skills earn them spots on the basketball team of a prestigious private high school. The contrast between the Chicago-area inner city poverty they were familiar with and the affluent culture that they were plunged into is a key element of the story as they pursue their hopes of playing professional basketball.
The film has a 98% approval rating from the movie review site "Rotten Tomatoes," which says, "One of the most critically acclaimed documentaries of all time, "Hoop Dreams" is a rich, complex, heartbreaking, and ultimately deeply rewarding film that uses high school hoops as a jumping-off point to explore issues of race, class, and education in modern America."
At Monte Vista, Agee will show sections of the movie, followed by a dynamic talk about his life in high school and what has happened in the 15 years afterward. His goal is to help students understand what they personally can do to find real-life success, and to inspire them with the importance of getting an education.
"I'm really excited to have him come to our area," says Dan Mooney, head basketball coach at Monte Vista, who arranged for Agee's visit. "He's going to inspire students as they face the gang violence and drug abuse that are spreading into every city. We?d like to see students and families come from counties all around us."
The event will take place during the Don and Martha Price Holiday Classic Varsity Girls and Boys Basketball Tournament. The movie will be shown at 7pm, and Agee will speak afterward.
The public is invited. Tournament admission is $5 adults/$3 students & seniors/$2 ages 7-12/ ages 6 and under free. Through the generous sponsorship of Watsonville Chevrolet, Agee's presentation is free for those who buy tickets for the Tournament. WATSONVILLE - A 2011 Chevy Volt, the new electric plug-in hybrid, arrived in the showroom of Chevrolet of Watsonville Friday, according to Melvin Cooper, who owns the dealership.
The Volt is already sold to a buyer who wants to remain anonymous, but it will remain in the showroom at 490 Auto Center Drive so people can take a look. The Volt comes in six colors; this one is White Diamond.
More than 20 names are on a wait-list for a Volt, which was chosen 2011 Motor Trend Car of the Year.
"It will be tough to get one," Cooper said. "Only 10,000 are being produced."
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says the Volt can go 35 miles on electricity alone with a total range of 379 miles. General Motors contends it can go up to 50 miles on pure electric power.
The manufacturer's suggested retail price is $40,280. A $7,500 federal tax credit available to the first 200,000 buyers of plug-in electric vehicles
